This will be an interesting exercise since extreme cold or extreme heat is an issue for me. Being at ease on either side of the temperature spectrum will certainly be challenging! I don't anticipate any really cold weather but the heat and humidity has been coming around, so we'll see how that goes.

Choosing Peace



It's been a very busy week, somewhat hectic, but thankfully not overly so. My brain has been working overtime lately and that can be more exhausting than when I've been physically busy. Nonetheless, I am not in the mood for thinking or wondering or speculating. Some days I don't have the answers and today is one of them. So on this Sunday, I choose to surrender it all and just enjoy a peaceful and joyful day.

Mindfulness

Here is this week's mindfulness exercise:



Trees. They are so beautiful. I can't imagine a world without them. Our property doesn't have a single one on it and it is quite depressing. We intended to plant a couple this year but with the severe heat and drought, we decided against it. We didn't want to chance a newly transplanted tree struggling to survive and possibly dying. So we'll try again next spring. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the abundant trees that are already out there for my viewing pleasure.

Positive Thoughts


My internal dialogue, the conversation my ego has with itself, can sometimes be negative. And when it is, I view the world through a pessimistic filter. Whenever I find myself in that predicament, I replace those dismal thoughts with uplifting and optimistic affirmations to put me in a more positive state. It isn't always easy to be upbeat, and certainly requires real effort some days, but it is worth it. Life is much more pleasant when viewed through a peaceful and joyful filter.

Coming To Life

I'm back!

I took longer to return than I had intended but I enjoyed the break far more than I thought I would. I actually questioned at one point if I wanted to return at all. But I enjoy the connection with all of you so much that quitting blogging permanently is just not an option right now.


There's no doubt that I needed to catch my breath and there's no doubt that blog breaks will become a regular practice from now on. When will I take breaks? For how long? I don't know. I'll take it one day at a time and decide from there.


I was feeling a little burned out when I paused this site and really needed to focus on rejuvenating and re-energizing. Sometimes I run out of ideas and motivation and even enthusiasm. And that's okay. That's when I take a step back and concentrate on filling my internal well.


I am now ready to come out of my shell and re-engage. I hope you all had a wonderful August and I wish everyone a very happy September!

Surrendering To Inner Peace

My morning started off with articles and videos on different news media sites sharing stories about racist, nasty, xenophobic and hateful actions and behaviours by people inside and outside my country.

It was bad enough reading about strangers behaving this way but when I discovered equally hateful ideologies shared on Facebook by people I know personally, it was not only disheartening but also very disturbing.


In moments like these, I feel like my entire foundation is shaken and it takes quite some time for me to calm the inner turmoil that is triggered by the outer chaos. I did not intend for my day to start like this and I will focus on finding my center, so that I can enjoy this beautiful Sunday.



I will remind myself that there is more good in this world than bad and surrender to inner peace.

Gratitude


What are you grateful for today?

On this cloudy Sunday I'm very grateful for the heavy rain that will be arriving soon. It has been very hot and dry for most of July, and a good downpour will be a real blessing.

I'm also grateful for how quiet it is in our home as I write this post. I think I will kick back, relax and just enjoy a peaceful Sunday.

Patience

Patience is often compromised in this fast-paced world, yet it is an important contributor to our well-being. It moves us away from frustration and anger, and creates feelings of contentment and tranquility. It is a skill that needs to be cultivated and an exercise that needs to be performed daily.

I can't say I always master this skill but I do work hard on cultivating it. Most days I'm successful at it, and on the days I'm not, I work hard on finding my balance.

Simplifying Your Life


What can I clear out of my life that will enrich and empower me?
What blocks me from simplifying my life?
What will my ultimate result be if I simplify my environment and activities?


I am a minimalist and clutter stresses me. I go through cleaning frenzies whenever the house begins to feel overloaded with what I consider "unnecessary items". I donate, recycle and toss out things regularly by asking myself:

Do I like it?
Do I need it?
Will I ever use it?

If the answer is no to any of these questions, out it goes. Every time something gets removed from our home, I feel happier, lighter, and freer. There is something quite liberating about an airy feel in the home. Not to mention how much easier it is to clean a clutter-free house!

But I don't only focus on material items; I also try to work on clearing mental and emotional clutter. I have a very active mind and I'm constantly reflecting on things. Sometimes a tad too much. There are periods where I think and feel so much that it feels like my brain is overheating. Abundant thoughts and feelings need an outlet and that's where my journal comes in handy. Nature, too. Jotting down whatever is floating around in my mind and whatever is plaguing me, or spending time outdoors surrounded by the beauty of nature helps free up mental space and gets rid of the emotional baggage.

Focusing on mindfulness and gratefulness, and de-cluttering whatever does not serve a purpose helps keep me balanced. It is an ongoing effort but one that is certainly well worth it.

Mother Earth

Can it ever be stressed enough about the importance of caring for our planet? About keeping it healthy and clean? About respecting all living beings on it? It seems that the human race has a hard time grasping this. Instead of being mindful and responsible stewards, we often take a careless and reckless approach towards the only home we have and its resources. We place profits and greed before the care and concern Mother Earth needs. This attitude is foolish and dangerous. And ultimately destructive.

Will we ever learn? Hopefully we will before it's too late.

Mother Earth is at our disposal to enjoy. Not to exploit or deplete or possess or dominate.

We must love, honour and respect her. And she will shower us with her beauty and abundance.

Peace


Will we ever achieve world peace? I don't know. But I do like to think that we'll get there. That we can. Because I truly believe that there are far more good people in the world than bad, and together they are a force to be reckoned with, capable of achieving just about anything. Including bringing about world peace. It probably won't happen in my lifetime but I have faith in future generations. I have faith that they will bring about positive changes on this planet for all living beings.

Today, start with peace within yourself. Let go of negative emotions and release negative energy. Think positive and expect the best. And most importantly, stay away from drama and toxic people. They will only drag you down.

When you are peaceful within, you can bring peace to others.

Everyone's A Teacher

It may not always seem like they serve a purpose, but everyone has something to teach us, even the individuals that grind on our nerves. Some of the most toxic people I've run across in my life have brought along the greatest lessons. With some of them I've become better, stronger and more resilient. I've also learned to rise up, speak my truth and draw clear lines in the sand for personal boundaries.

So yes, even the a-holes serve a purpose.

Truth



Dishonesty, particularly in politics, is nothing new, but lately it has reached a level of madness. There is so much misinformation and distortion of facts that searching for the truth is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Some people refuse to let go of the lies no matter how outrageous or unethical they become. And even if you present solid proof to counter the dishonesty, they dig their heels in a little deeper, refusing to accept reality if it doesn’t align with their views. And if you persist, they get upset, even aggressive.

But despite the resistance, there has never been a more important time to stand by the truth. To tell the truth. To share the truth. To seek out the truth. No matter how much more effort than usual is required to dig through the putrid deceptions to get to it.

Superficial reality has an expiration date, but the truth lasts forever.

Faraway Places



When my daughter, Alex (whom some of you know from her blog and/or her Instagram account) was about 7 or 8, she said to me one day:

When I grow up, I’m going to live in New Zealand.”

I was a little taken aback by her comment because of her unusual choice for a destination. How many times do you hear anyone, let alone a young child, tell you they’re interested in living in New Zealand.

Why New Zealand?” I asked.

Because it’s a really beautiful country.” She told me.


Well...

As I write this, she is on a plane headed to Vancouver where she will board another flight that will take her to New Zealand where she will spend the next four months as an exchange student. This is one of the most exciting adventures of her young life!

I am not surprised. Alex is – and always has been - an eternal optimist who lives life boldly and passionately and determinedly. She doesn’t just dream about what she wants, she makes it happen. She has an insane amount of energy and puts it all to use. And she never gives up easily on what she pursues. Obstacles are merely challenges to find another way to make something happen.


And so that little girl who announced so many years ago – with abundant confidence - her plan to live in New Zealand is on her way right now to realize that dream.

If you want something bad enough, you can make it happen.
